A Good Alternative
To celebrate Earth Day, students from the Learning Opportunity Center (LOPC) in Franklin walked to their nearby McDonald's to get a free tree. Various students sent notes of appreciation for the trees that were planted at the school. The notes can be found below.

Planting Trees
My name is Shane and I am a student at the alternative school in Franklin, KY called LOPC. The purpose of this article is to show the appreciation for the trees that you have provided us for our schoolyard and
the environment. The Earth that we live on is a sacred place it is our home, life, and everything that we need to live. See on Friday April 25,2008 we made our way up to McDonald's to get a bunch of trees to plant to save our environment. That afternoon we went outside during our club period to plant our newly acquired trees along the edge of the parking lot. Not only do we now have an out of bounds line for when we are playing football but we have trees that have decorated our school to make it look like a better place to be. I would like to send thanks out to all of the sponsors of this program that gives the trees away. Not only would I like to thank them but I would also like to thank McDonald's for their cooperation with our students and for giving us so many trees to plant. Our parking lot in a few years will look a lot better and healthier for future LOPC students. A few have vandalized our trees by pulling them up but that is not going to slow down our cause of making our environment all it can be. Thank you for your time and thanks to all the sponsors that supports this program.

Planting trees
By, Robert
Hello my name is Robert and I am a student at the alternative school in Franklin, Kentucky called LOPC. We planted some trees we got from McDonalds on Friday April 25, 2008. When we got back to school we planted the trees in front of where we play football along the parking lot. On April 30, 2008 we found that some one had pulled up 3 of the trees but we have replanted them. Weare also watering the trees and so we are taking real good care of the trees and we planted 19 trees and we are going to plant two more trees later on today on May 1, 2008. SO I would like to thank
Western public Radio, McDonald's, WKYU, and Park City Daily News for letting us have the trees here at LOPC.

Alternative School Plants Trees for Earth Day
By Derek
FRANKLIN, KY -- On Friday, April 25, 2008 the Learning Opportunity Center in Franklin, KY planted trees outside of the school for Earth Day. The students went to the McDonald's in front of the school and received over 20 trees for free. We then went back to the school and planted 19 trees in a row in front of the school themselves. Mr. Franz and Dr. Band stated that they did it to show appreciation to the earth with it being Earth Day. Mr. Franz also said that more people should do things like this to help out the earth. In the recent past some people have damaged the earth instead of helping it. Instead of picking up trash and planting trees, they have littered the earth and cut down trees. This not only affects the environment for us but it also affects the animals that are living in that area. In the present day there are companies that are planting at least three trees for each one that they cut down to sustain and grow the forests. Some people are also polluting the air that we have to breathe. Instead of trying to keep the air clean people are polluting the air and causing others to get diseases and are dieing. To help prevent these diseases and pollution there are people planted trees. HELP THE EARTH BY PLANTING MORE PLANTS THAN YOU CUT DOWN OR PICK.

Trees
by: Meghan
On April 25, 2008, LOPC walked to McDonalds on Arbor Day and ask for the free trees they were giving out. Over 20 trees were given to the LOPC students to plant. After leaving Mcdonalds all the students were given a tree to plant in the LOPC yard. Some students got to bring their trees home but everyone put effort in making the trees look very nice. Later that day a few students left school went to the store and brought back mulch to put around the tree to help the mower men who came to mow the yeard so he wouldn't mow all the trees down. Every year in the United States there are more and more trees being planted to replace the ones that have been cut down for our own personal uses. Every time we cut down a tree in the United States, to replace them there will be not just one tree to replace the one cut down, but numerous trees. That's because it takes the tree 12 years until they can be used by us. We are gaining all our green back and it getting better and better time a new year comes to meet us. I can say thank you for making and really appreciating this day because it just doesn't make the earth healthy but keeps you and me still breathing.
